Media and multimedia for learning

Use words, visuals, audio, video and animation purposefully, accessibly and without unnecessary cognitive burden.

Overview

Media for learning includes the deliberate use of text, speech, images, diagrams, animation, audio and video to help learners attend to, organise and integrate information.

Multimedia is not simply the presence of several media types. Effective multimedia design selects and coordinates representations so that each contributes to the learning purpose without competing for limited attention and working-memory resources.

Relevance to teaching and learning

Well-designed media can make processes visible, direct attention to important relationships, provide examples, reduce unnecessary search and allow learners to revisit explanations.

Poorly designed media can split attention, repeat information in burdensome ways, introduce decorative distraction or exclude learners who cannot access a particular sensory channel. Media design is therefore both a learning-design and accessibility responsibility.

Key ideas

  • Remove what does not serve the learning goal. Decorative elements, background sound and unnecessary detail can consume attention.
  • Signal structure and relationships. Use headings, highlighting, labels and visual hierarchy to show what matters.
  • Place related information together. Keep labels near the visual elements they explain and coordinate narration with the relevant animation.
  • Segment complex explanations. Break content into learner-paced parts and provide orientation before introducing detail.
  • Use complementary representations. Combine words and visuals when each contributes distinct information; avoid simply duplicating dense on-screen text in narration.
  • Design accessibility from the start. Plan captions, transcripts, visual descriptions, contrast, keyboard access and alternatives during scripting and production.
  • Invite generative activity. Ask learners to explain, draw, compare, predict or summarise rather than only watch.
  • Test with real users. Observe what learners notice, misunderstand, skip and replay.

Use cases and examples

  • An animation of a scientific process segmented into short phases with narration, labels and opportunities to predict the next event.
  • A worked example that uses signalling to connect each reasoning step to a diagram.
  • A video with accurate captions, a descriptive transcript and integrated explanation of essential visual information.
  • An AI-assisted first draft that is checked for factual accuracy, curriculum alignment, cultural appropriateness, accessibility and copyright risk before classroom use.

Limitations and implementation cautions

  • More media does not mean more learning.
  • Automatic captions and AI-generated descriptions require human checking.
  • Narration plus identical on-screen paragraphs can overload rather than reinforce.
  • Learner control can help pacing, but poorly designed controls may increase navigation burden.

Evidence

The multimedia-learning literature provides a substantial evidence base for principles such as coherence, signalling, contiguity, segmenting, pre-training and carefully chosen modality. These are conditional design principles rather than universal formatting rules. W3C guidance emphasises planning accessibility during scripting and production, including captions, transcripts, descriptions of visual information and accessible media controls.
