At a glance

Extended reality can make places, processes, scales and perspectives available in ways that conventional classroom media cannot. It should be selected because it enables a valuable form of learning — not because immersion is assumed to be engaging or innovative.

1. The terms

AR — augmented reality: digital information is overlaid on a view of the physical world, usually through a phone, tablet or glasses. Typical use: labels, data, models or guidance attached to physical objects and locations.

VR — virtual reality: the learner enters a computer-generated environment, often through a headset. Typical use: spatial exploration, rehearsal, virtual field experiences and embodied simulations.

MR — mixed reality: digital elements are anchored within the physical environment and may respond to the user, objects or space. Typical use: manipulating 3D models while remaining aware of the room and other people.

XR — extended reality: an umbrella term covering AR, VR, MR and related combinations of physical and digital experience.

2. Start with the educational need

XR is most defensible when the learning objective depends on one or more of the following:

  • Spatial understanding — learners need to inspect relationships among objects, systems or places in three dimensions.
  • Embodied rehearsal — learners need to practise decisions, movement or procedures in a controlled environment.
  • Access — the real place, scale, time period or phenomenon is inaccessible, rare, distant or impossible to observe directly.
  • Safety — real practice carries unacceptable cost, risk or ethical constraints.
  • Perspective — the learning task benefits from experiencing a situation from a particular position or viewpoint.
  • Repeatability — learners need to revisit, pause, vary or compare a process that is difficult to control in reality.

A necessary comparison: before selecting XR, compare it with a physical model, field visit, demonstration, video, desktop simulation, role-play or conventional interactive. Choose the least complex medium that fully serves the learning objective.

3. Design the learning sequence, not only the experience

  1. Prepare: establish prior knowledge, vocabulary, purpose, safety expectations and what learners should attend to.
  2. Orient: show how to navigate, interact, pause, request help and exit.
  3. Experience: give learners a focused task that requires meaningful observation, action or decision.
  4. Externalise: ask learners to record, sketch, explain, compare or justify what they noticed.
  5. Discuss: connect individual experience to shared concepts, evidence and alternative interpretations.
  6. Apply: use a new case or representation to test whether learning transfers beyond the immersive setting.

4. Classroom orchestration

  • Plan meaningful learning for students who are waiting, observing or supporting a peer.
  • Decide whether the experience is individual, paired, rotating-station or teacher-facilitated.
  • Use roles such as navigator, observer, recorder and questioner when learners work in groups.
  • Keep headset time proportionate to the task; more time is not automatically more effective.
  • Prepare a non-headset alternative that addresses the same learning intention where possible.
  • Test accounts, connectivity, charging, casting, hygiene, floor space and reset procedures before the lesson.

5. Accessibility, wellbeing and inclusion

  • Provide an equivalent alternative for learners who cannot or prefer not to use the immersive mode.
  • Consider motion sensitivity, visual acuity, hearing, mobility, reach, balance, sensory load and anxiety.
  • Allow users to pause and exit without penalty.
  • Avoid requiring rapid movement, fine motor precision or sustained standing unless these are essential to the objective.
  • Provide captions, transcripts, sound alternatives and sufficient contrast where the application allows.
  • Check that instructions, controls and feedback can be perceived and understood through more than one channel.
  • Follow organisational and manufacturer guidance concerning age, session duration, supervision, hygiene and safe use.

6. Evaluate the educational fit

Purpose — strong indication: the experience enables a specific spatial, embodied, safe or otherwise inaccessible form of learning. Warning sign: the main rationale is novelty, motivation or showing that the school uses new technology.

Learner action — strong indication: students observe, decide, manipulate, practise or explain something central to the objective. Warning sign: students mainly look around or follow a fixed tour.

Guidance — strong indication: cues and prompts direct attention while preserving productive agency. Warning sign: learners are overwhelmed or simply follow instructions without thinking.

Integration — strong indication: preparation and follow-up connect the experience to concepts and assessment. Warning sign: the experience is an isolated event.

Access — strong indication: alternatives and adjustments allow meaningful participation. Warning sign: use depends on one sensory, motor or comfort profile.

Feasibility — strong indication: the learning value justifies preparation, equipment, support and lesson time. Warning sign: logistical effort displaces the intended learning.

7. Possible use cases

  • Investigating structures that are too small, large or complex to inspect directly.
  • Rehearsing emergency, laboratory, technical or interpersonal procedures.
  • Exploring reconstructed historical, geographical or cultural environments.
  • Overlaying explanatory information on physical artefacts, equipment or sites.
  • Comparing alternative designs or spatial arrangements before physical construction.

8. Evidence and caution

Research indicates that XR can support learning, engagement and confidence in some contexts, but results vary. Strong outcomes depend on instructional design, learner characteristics, subject matter, duration and the comparison activity. Presence and agency can support attention and motivation, but immersive environments may also introduce extraneous cognitive load. The appropriate question is therefore not “Does VR work?” but “For this learning objective, with this design and these learners, does the immersive experience add value over a viable alternative?”

9. First-use planning checklist

  • The learning objective is explicit.
  • XR provides a clear advantage for this objective.
  • The learner task requires meaningful action or observation.
  • Preparation and debrief are planned.
  • Device logistics have been rehearsed.
  • Access needs and an alternative route are available.
  • Evidence of learning will be collected.
  • The activity will be reviewed before wider use.
